Comments and Ruminations
6-28-09 What Is Art? Now there is a question I haven't thought much about recently. It has become a joke in the form
of a question because it is virtually unanswerable except through the addition of the phrase, "to you" added to the end.
To me art is just about any form of self expression designed to be observed or experienced by other people. The
common art forms of music, writing, painting, sculpture, photography, acting, cinema, (movie making to those of us who
are culturally challenged) are well known and accepted. I would also include body art, life style, and the persona we
choose to display to the world.
I've added a page called "Sources of Inspiration" where I am linking to the sites of some interesting forms of self
expression. If you try the links feel free to express your opinion through the "Contact Us" page and if we get enough
comments I will post them on the site.
9-24-09 So far the purpose and objectives for this website have not been achieved or have been achieved only
minimally. I'm not sure if not enough artists have discovered the site, or if they have seen the site but are just not
interested in participating, or if those who would like to participate don't know enough about digital photography, don't
have the necessary equipment, or don't have enough computer savvy to attach a digital photo to an email and join the
archive. Too many unknowns to draw a logical conclusion about how to proceed. Perhaps with time and as more and
more folks stumble across it, the site will gain momentum.
I must also concede that it just may not be an idea whose time has come, or will ever come. I will keep going for a
while and hope to get more participation with time.
One of the artists I am interested in displaying in the archive is a deceased painter named Mun Quan who lived in
Jacksonville, Florida. He taught at Jacksonville University in the '60s and '70s. I greatly admired his work when I was
in high school and as a young adult. He painted misty, dreamy, and abstract landscapes with a strong Asian feel to
them. I think he died before the rise of the Internet and I've been unable to find any visual record of his work. That's a
shame because it was worth seeing.
If you happen to know anyone who owns a Mun Quan painting please direct them to this website's "Contact us" page.
His work should be preserved for the enjoyment of future viewers, and perhaps you can help to make that happen.
1/21/2010 Those pages are now a reality and are a beginning of a new branching of the site. More sections will be
added with time. Some that are envisioned will be involved with my interest and experiences with unpowered water
craft, river camping trips, and salt water fishing. I also take a lot of photos, many of which will appear on the
Boggybottom web site in the near future. Also, we are considering getting horses, which will be an entirely new
adventure that I will document on the site if it comes to pass.
5/9/10 Obviously I don't update these comments very often. I would like to do it more often. I think I should. Problem
is, I get so busy and involved with the living of life that I don't allow enough time for commenting on it. I don't anticipate
that will change in the near future. On this date I've added a new section about becoming a horse owner. We now
have one and are about to get another. A horse is a large animal that poops a lot, has a lot of muscles, is programed
to run away from anything that surprises it, and can form some mysterious mental link with humans. We've only had
limited contact with horses in our lives before now, so this is a big adventure with both physical and mental challenges.
Most recent comments are now at the top of the page.
5/25/10 When I started this website I decided to stay away from such sensitive subjects as religion and politics. I am
finding this too constricting and have decide to air some of my opinions about the affairs of humanity. I understand
that this will open me up to criticisms and insults. Never the less, due to events I feel compelled to comment on some
current issues, so I will add a feature to the site that will post these opinions, and I will call this section RANTS. You
may not agree with me and you may have sound reasoning to support your views. If so, go to the "Contact Us" page
and send your response. I'll post it near the my related rant. Please keep it clean and try not to stoop to name-calling.
5/29/10 There's something very satisfying about growing corn. It's hard to define what that is, but when it is
doing well the plants are nice to look at and to smell, and there's nothing like braking off a fresh ripe ear of
sweet corn warmed by the sun, ripping back the husk and eating the kernels raw. To me it's a sense of
accomplishment and an experience of almost religious intensity, This year I decided to try a couple of varieties
of heritage corn grown with minimal synthetic fertilizer, frequent applications of manure, and as usual, no
pesticides at all.
