More stuff I learned about goats, some of which
may not be true.
- The main types of goats found in the U.S. are: Nubian, Boar, Spanish, and mixed
breed generics.
- There are also fainting goats for people who enjoy watching animals fall over into
an unconscious state
- Goats only eat tin cans in the cartoons, but they do enjoy a good glued label.
- Goats don't like to be alone.
- Goats don't like their feet wet so there should be a raised floor area in their shed.
- Goats don't like to be rained on so they require an accessible shelter with a roof.
- If a billy runs with the herd, there should be a half a dozen nannies to prevent over-
use of individual females.
- If the billy is kept away from the herd he will emit a much stronger odor.
- If milk goats are kept too near a billy the milk they produce will taste like the billy
smells. Which is pretty disgusting.
- Immature female goats should be kept separate from the billy until they reach
maturity. Billy goats have no morals.
- Goats need access to a mineral block.
- Wild azaleas are poisonous to goats.
- When goats don't have enough browse or other feed, they'll peel the bark around
tree trunks killing the tree.
- Goats will stand and walk on their hind legs to browse leaves they like.
- Goats will eat things not good for them.
- Diarrhea is often a terminal event in goats and goats with that symptom must be
isolated immediately.
- Goats will foul their own feed.
- Not much is known about goat diseases except that they seem to easily spread to
an entire herd unless the sick animals are quickly isolated..
- Goat sheds should be disinfected regularly to maintain herd health
- If goats don't like their living conditions, they will leave at the first opportunity.
Types of Goats;
Nubian Goat- A large, floppy eared goat bred for milking
Boar Goat- A large, muscular goat bred for meat production. Although they were very expensive for a while,
(as much as $800 for a pure blood billy) the price of these goats has come down as they have become less rare
in the U.S.. Goats with Boar Goat genes are easily recognizable by their dark head and neck and white body.
Spanish Goat- Generally smaller than the Nubian or Boar goats, Spanish goats are a utilitarian breed I find
difficult to tell from ordinary mixed breeds.
Fainting Goats- A small goat that faints when excited. I have no idea why people like these except maybe as
conversation stimulants.
This picture has nothing to do with goats. Its the Satilla River in spring flood stage a few miles west of
Waycross, Georgia. I put it here for eye candy and because I've run out of things to say about goats and I
don't have any more pictures of them.
